The redwood is one of nature's most extraordinary achievements — ancient, resilient, and remarkable in its growth. In many ways, the journey of a redwood mirrors the journey of coaching. Here is that story.
Stage One
Every redwood tree begins as a seed no larger than a fingernail — easily overlooked, yet containing everything it will ever become. Coaching begins in the same quiet place: the moment you become aware that something in your life is ready to change. It may arrive as a sense of restlessness, a question you keep returning to, or simply a feeling that there is more. This is the seed of self-discovery. It asks nothing of you yet, except that you notice it.
Stage Two
Before a redwood tree reaches for the sky, it reaches into the earth. Its roots spread wide and deep, drawing nourishment and — crucially — intertwining with the roots of surrounding trees, sharing strength. In coaching, this is the work of building foundations: understanding your values, your patterns, and your inner landscape. You discover what truly grounds you, and where your greatest sources of strength already lie. No great height is possible without this work below the surface.
Stage Three
The trunk of a redwood tree is extraordinary in its resilience. Its bark can be up to thirty centimetres thick — resistant to fire, storm, and the slow pressure of time. Yet it is not rigid; it flexes in the wind rather than breaks. Coaching builds this same quality in you. You learn to face obstacles without being defined by them, to remain grounded when circumstances shift, and to find in difficulty not a reason to stop, but a reason to grow stronger. Resilience is not the absence of struggle — it is what the struggle builds.
Stage Four
Given time, nourishment, and the right conditions, the redwood tree reaches heights that seem almost impossible — the tallest living things on earth, touching heights of over 110 metres. Their canopies create entirely new ecosystems; worlds above the world. Coaching brings you to this place: where your growth becomes generative, where new possibilities open not just for you, but for everyone around you. This is where potential, long dormant in that first small seed, finally finds its full expression.
Stage Five
No redwood stands alone. The ancient groves endure because the trees support one another — through shared root systems, through shelter, through the way each tree's growth creates conditions for the next. A life shaped by coaching becomes something like this: not a story told in isolation, but one woven into a wider tapestry. The changes you make ripple outward — in how you show up for others, in what you model, in the world you quietly help to build. This is the deepest gift of growth: it is never yours alone.
